Census Sheds Light on Amelia’s Population

Amelia County’s population grew more than 11 percent, to 12,690 residents, during the past decade, according to the 2010 census. The population of Hispanics tripled, though in absolute numbers, they’re still pretty small (290). Amelia’s black population actually shrank during this period.

Virginia Mulls Shield Law for Journalists

Virginia has not yet enshrined in law one of Thomas Jefferson’s most ardently held principles: the protected role of a free press in a democracy. Delegate Barbara Comstock would like to change that. In the 2011 General Assembly, she introduced a bill to grant journalists limited protection from being compelled to disclose confidential sources.

Virginia May Create ‘Veterans Courts’

The House of Delegates has unanimously passed a bill that could provide treatment instead of jail for veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury and run into trouble with the law. House Bill 1691, introduced by Delegate Christopher P. Stolle, R-Virginia Beach, allows localities to establish “policies and procedures for service members who are nonviolent offenders.”

Shops May Be Taking a Chance

Is it an online gambling operation or a cyber-café? That’s the question surrounding the Internet Shoppees in Amelia Bottom and the Village Square Shopping Center. Law enforcement officials have raided similar businesses in Roanoke, Virginia Beach, Pittsylvania County and Farmville, and state legislators are considering whether to explicitly outlaw such operations.
