Women Underrepresented in Virginia General Assembly

The number of women in the Virginia House of Delegates has risen steadily over the years. Even so, women still are vastly underrepresented among the 100 delegates. Here is a year-by-year breakdown, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

The first woman wasn’t elected to the 40-member Virginia Senate until 1981. Representation of women in that chamber also has lagged:
